Several months ago I handed in a petition to the mayor at full council, calling on Bolton Council to convert the chapel at Astley Bridge Cemetery into a Library, Local Education Centre and Community Cafe.

On the 26th September I was asked by Head of Bereavement Services to give additional information, regards librarythe possibility of converting it. Which I duly did. Stressing the importance of this building to the community, the need for the services, and a chance to save one of Bolton’s historic buildings.

Hopefully the cabinet member will see the value in the proposition, in saving an historic building in Bolton from decay and providing much needed facilities back into the Astley Bridge Community.

We must remain sensitive to the fact that the building is in a cemetery, but on the same hand we must think outside the box in rescuing this building. After much consultation with residents, it was judged the above use would be in keeping with sensitivity.
